They needed something that could match the light wood featured throughout their house and were hoping to use reclaimed wood. We found some barn wood that really fit the bill and spiced it up with purple heart wedges. All corners are curved for safety purposes and also to give the bookcase a softer look. The bookcase is five feet long and 27" tall.
The only joints in this piece are mechanical; specifically, they are mortises with draw-bored through tenons. In other words, tongues from the shelves poke through the side supports, the purpleheart wedges pull the shelves tightly against the supports, and that's actually what's holding the whole thing together.
