And sometimes I get sleepy during work. And sloppy. And then sometimes I step in a dark stain and wipe it off, but do a crappy job wiping it so it's still on my slipper when I stomp around the room, and then I go ahead and stomp up and down a stairwell, spreading stain all over our nice hardwood floors. (See the picture on the left? It was like that all over the room and in the stairwell.)
That's usually when Nico finds me and asks me why there's stain all over his pretty floors. Luckily for me, there's an easy way to clean up finishing stain (and - I suspect - nail polish, paint, etc.) spills on hardwood floors. Even if the stain has been settling into the floors for a few days (which, in my case, it was). Please read on to learn the secrets of my trade!
P.S. Check back to learn how to remove water stains from a wood table...because I definitely put a vase on one of Nico's prettiest tables and it left a sad little ring. Maybe I should start a new whoopsie Dacey category?
- Mineral spirits (you can buy it at the hardware store)
- Rag or paper towel
- Putty knife (a paint scraper would work too)
Using your rag (we use blue shop towels - they're more heavy duty than normal paper towels) wipe a generous amount of mineral spirits over the stain. If you're lucky some of the stain will wipe right up, but if not don't stress.
GENTLY. Using your putty knife scrape the finish off very slowly. Push in each direction. Be gentle, it will come off. If you get too rough you'll scrape your poor hardwood floors.
Get that mineral spirits rag and wipe up the finish. Boom! Your floor is clean.
